It had to do with the relay IP address being set wrong in the sonicwall's DHCP over VPN configuration. I did have it set as central gateway and it was told to forward requests to the correct server but I should not have set the relay ip on the central gateway it usually configures it automatically depending on the VPN connection and I had set
